In coming months, the American Hotel and Lodging Association will seek to convince the public and Trump administration officials that online booking sites are behaving like monopolies and need to be reined in, according to the news site Bloomberg.
AHLA has created a campaign to argue online travel companies are using unfair business practices, according to association documents obtained by Bloomberg. Two companies—Expedia and Priceline—currently dominate online booking services.
"There is nothing surprising about AHLA's efforts to educate government officials and consumers about the negative consequences of increased consolidation within the online travel agency marketplace," Rosanna Maietta, senior vice president of communications for AHLA, told the news agency. https://bloom.bg/2qw7cd3
In a presentation to investors Tuesday, Priceline CEO Glenn Fogel ridiculed the notion that his company was acting like a monopoly, according to the travel news site Skift. He said AHLA is simply trying to direct more traffic to its members' websites.
"I do fault anybody who makes misstatements or allegations that aren't true," Fogel said about the campaign. http://bit.ly/2qw8d4N
